The Problem with AI-Assisted Drafts
AI drafts can produce a surprising volume of clean-looking text. The sentences parse, the paragraphs hold a shape, and the logic appears to track on the surface. But read ten pages with any care and you start to feel something is wrong.
The transitions land nowhere and every paragraph opens with the same construction. Where you expect feeling, the prose names an emotion and moves on. There is a flatness to the phrasing that you cannot quite locate at first, but once you see it the whole manuscript changes in front of you.
Repetitive paragraph structure, mechanical transitions, and synthetic phrasing accumulate across a long manuscript, and the cumulative effect is a draft that was assembled.

The goal is not to disguise bad writing.
The goal is to make the manuscript better, so it reads the way a thinking person would have written it and not the way a language model would predict the next word. Editing AI-assisted manuscripts well is still editing, and it requires judgment.
What I Fix
These are the problems I see most often in AI-assisted and AI-generated manuscripts, and I address each of them at the sentence and paragraph level.
Synthetic or repetitive phrasing
Generic word choices that appear throughout the draft. The writer stops noticing. The reader does not.
Inert AI rhythm
Sentences that are grammatically correct and make no impression. They carry no weight.
Generic emotional language
Emotion named directly. "She felt devastated" where specific detail would do the work.
Mechanical transitions
Connective tissue that announces the shift between ideas or scenes instead of making it.
Flat or absent voice
Prose that processes information without any discernible point of view. It sounds like no one.
Repetitive paragraph openings
The same structural pattern appearing every two pages. Readers feel it before they can identify it.
Humanizer damage
Prose already run through automated tools. New errors introduced, original problems unsolved.
Long manuscripts ordinary tools cannot handle
Full-length books and extended projects revised with consistent editorial attention throughout.
Evaluative triplets
Comma-separated trios of adjectives or praise words. "Clear, concise, and compelling." The single most common AI signature in manuscript prose.
Em-dash overuse
AI-generated text leans on em dashes the way a crutch leans on a wall. Two or three per page, every page, is a pattern readers register.
Binary contrasts and negation framing
"Not X but Y." Sentences built around what something is not, rather than stating what it is. AI prose defines by opposition when direct statement would be stronger.
Aphoristic verdict sentences
Short standalone declarations that announce a conclusion. "Trust is everything." "That changes things." The prose stops earning its points and starts labeling them.
